A mass shooting in Washington, DC, in the United States, has led to the deaths of three people, while two others sustained various degrees of gunshot wounds.

Confirming the incident, Washington, DC, acting police Chief Pamela Smith stated that officers from the district are investigating the shooting in the southeast.

She said, “Let me be clear: this gun violence has to stop. It is incredibly frustrating; we know that someone in the community knows what is happening”.

Officers responded to the incident by arriving at the intersection of Good Hope Road and 16th Street SE about 9 p.m., where they discovered five casualties, four males and one female.

According to the police, two men and a woman died at the scene of the incident, while two others were brought to a nearby hospital, and their statuses are unknown.

Condemning the shooting, the acting police chief said “this kind of gun violence is not acceptable in the District of Columbia. This is not a war zone. We want our residents to feel safe”.

While appealing for help from the public in gathering information about what she termed a ‘disturbing fatal shooting’, Smith said that a probe has begun into the shooting and the officers are still searching for more victims in this case.

“We realise that there may be others who may have been injured tonight. We are asking you to come forward,” said Smith.
