The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) confirmed on Sunday that Roberto Mancini has resigned as coach of European champions Italy.
In a statement, the FIGC stated that they “received late yesterday evening” Mancini’s surprising decision to resign.
“Because of important and close commitments for the team with Euro 2024 qualifiers against North Macedonia and Ukraine, the FIGC will announce the name of the new national coach in the next few days,” the federation noted.
Roberto took over after Italy failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup under Gian Piero Ventura.
Mancini, a former international, guided Italy to a Euro 2021 victory but failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Mancini’s departure came as a complete surprise, with no forewarning.
Earlier this month, the 58-year-old was also given charge of the country’s Under-21 and Under-20 squads.
The Italian press believed that Luciano Spalletti, who ended Napoli’s 33-year wait for the Serie A title last season before stepping down, may be lined up as his replacement.
