UECL: Madueke shines as Chelsea thrash Legia 3-0 in Warsaw

Chelsea took a commanding step toward the UEFA Europa Conference League (UECL) semi-finals with a dominant 3-0 win over Legia Warsaw in the first leg of their quarter-final clash at the Marshall Józef Piłsudski Stadium.

Despite Legia boasting the tournament’s best defensive record heading into the tie with five clean sheets, the Polish side struggled to contain a relentless Chelsea team stacked with talent and European experience.

The hosts started brightly, managing more shots than Chelsea in the opening half-hour, with efforts from Luquinhas and Ryōya Morishita narrowly missing the target. At the other end, Christopher Nkunku came close but couldn’t convert.

As the first half wore on, the visitors began to assert themselves. Kacper Tobiasz was called into action to deny Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Nkunku went close again. Dewsbury-Hall then spurned a golden opportunity just before half-time, heading wide from close range.

After the break, Chelsea came out firing. Within five minutes, 18-year-old Tyrique George tapped in a rebound for his first senior Chelsea goal after Reece James’ shot was parried.

Moments later, Noni Madueke doubled the lead with a clinical finish inside the box.

The Blues continued to press, with Jadon Sancho and Nkunku testing Tobiasz again. Dewsbury-Hall was brought down in the area by Patryk Kun, handing Nkunku a chance from the spot, but the Legia goalkeeper saved his penalty.

The visitors weren’t done yet. In the 78th minute, Madueke netted his second of the night, sweeping in Sancho’s low cross to complete a dominant display. Filip Jörgensen was called upon late to deny Kun, preserving Chelsea’s clean sheet.

It was a harsh lesson for Legia in their first European quarter-final in 29 years, and they now face an uphill task when they travel to Stamford Bridge for the return leg.
