Liverpool missed a crucial opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table after a dramatic 2-2 draw against Aston Villa in a pulsating encounter at Villa Park.

The result leaves the Reds eight points clear of Arsenal but maintains their unbeaten away record this season.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 24th minute, capitalizing on a costly mistake by Villa’s new signing, Andres Garcia. The defender’s errant pass fell straight to Diogo Jota, who set up Salah for his 24th league goal of the campaign.

However, Villa responded strongly, with Youri Tielemans equalizing in the 38th minute with a well-placed strike after Liverpool failed to clear a Marcus Rashford free-kick.

The hosts then completed a stunning turnaround just before halftime, as Ollie Watkins connected with Lucas Digne’s cross to head Villa into the lead. The visitors, however, showed resilience in the second half, with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s deflected effort restoring parity just past the hour mark.

    • Nervy Liverpool beat Wolves 2-1 to go seven points clear at top

Both sides pushed for a winner in a frenetic final 30 minutes, with Villa’s Jacob Ramsey having a goal ruled out for offside and Liverpool’s Donyell Malen coming agonizingly close to snatching victory in stoppage time.

Ultimately, the match ended in a draw, leaving Liverpool eight points clear at the top and Villa five points adrift of the top four.

The result keeps the title race alive, with Liverpool still in a strong position but aware of the need to capitalize on future opportunities.

For Aston Villa, the draw highlights their potential to compete with the league’s elite but also underscores the fine margins in their pursuit of a top-four finish.
