Liverpool FC’s sporting chief, Michael Edwards, and sporting director, Richard Hughes, have expressed deep sadness at the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, in a car accident, describing the loss as “devastating” and “irreplaceable”.

In a joint statement issued on behalf of the club on Thursday, the duo stated that there were no words to assuage the anguish caused by the tragedy and that the collective sadness across the football world was great.

“There is nothing that we can say in this moment to ease the pain of such a devastating tragedy. We all feel utterly bereft right now,” the statement read.

Liverpool authorities stated that the club was prioritising support for Jota’s family—his wife Rute, their three children, his parents, and extended family—who are dealing with “an unimaginable loss”.

“This tragic accident has taken not only Diogo but also his brother, Andre Silva. We mourn them both equally. We must respect the family’s privacy and give them the space to grieve in whichever way they need,” it added.

They also acknowledged the profound impact the death has had on the Liverpool players, club personnel, and the larger football community.

“Of course, we – his Liverpool family – are also struggling to come to terms with what has happened. As his teammates, friends and colleagues, we are consumed by shock and sorrow,” they said, adding, “This is a tragedy that transcends Liverpool Football Club.”

The club said it would launch tributes in the coming days to remember the late Portuguese forward and his achievements for Liverpool and football in general.

“We will strive to make these tributes meaningful and inclusive of our supporters, to whom Diogo meant so much,” the statement added.

The statement added, “We have lost someone truly irreplaceable. Rest in peace, Diogo. YNWA.”
