The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele, mocked Nigerians who have been debating the legality and morality of his decision to want to remain CBN governor while seeking to contest for the office of presidency.

Emefiele who have repeatedly denied vying for the office of President went to court to seek clarification on whether or not he can remain CBN governor while contesting for the office of President.

His lead counsel, Mike Ozekhome, argued in court that his client is a public office holder and not a civil servant, adding that, his appointment his tenured.

But the debate was somewhat put to rest President Muhammdu Buhari on Wednesday ordered all heads of agency, ambassadors, political appointees seeking elective offices to resign.

Twenty four hours after, Emefiele visited the President seeking further clarification even after the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, had provided one.

    • Court rejects Emefiele’s presidential plea

After the meeting with the President, Emefiele told reporters not to expect any now “news”, noting that, he was “having fun” with speculations around his presidential bid.

“There is no news now, but there will be news. You heard me, I said there is no news, but there will be news,” he said.

When reminded that given the office he holds, his ambition is creating anxiety among Nigerians and the international community, Emefiele said, “Let them have a heart attack. It’s good to have a heart attack. I am having a lot of fun.”

Chronicle NG reports that three interest groups – the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria, Friends of Emefiele and Emefiele Support Group – last week paid N100m for the APC presidential expression of interest and nominations forms for him.

It will also be recalled that an APC chairman in Delta state confirmed that the CBN governor is a registered member of the ruling APC.

APC chairman of Ward 6 in the Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, Nduka Erikpume, confirmed this on Sunday.

Erikpume said the CBN governor had registered as an APC member since February 2021.
