Skating on public roads in Osun State could soon land offenders behind bars for six months or cost them a hefty N250,000 fine, as lawmakers move to outlaw the activity.
During a heated Tuesday session in Abeokuta, the Osun House of Assembly deliberated on the Osun State Skating Restriction Bill 2025, with Speaker Adewale Egbedun announcing that skating on roads or sidewalks will be a criminal offence once the bill is passed.
Egbedun, who chaired the committee of the whole, described roller skating as strictly an indoor sport. “This bill is aimed at protecting both skaters and the public from harm,” he said.
Under the proposed law, citizens will be empowered to apprehend offenders and hand them over to the police. Both magistrate and high court will have jurisdiction to hear such cases.
“Anyone caught skating on a public road or sidewalk shall, upon conviction, face a minimum of six months imprisonment or pay at least N250,000 or both,” Egbedun stated.
After the debate, lawmakers moved on to consider another piece of legislation—the Osun State Multi-Door Court House Establishment Bill 2025, before adjourning till Monday, 12 May.
