The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has dismissed speculations stating that she has resigned.
Meranda’s Chief Press Secretary, Segun Ajiboye, refuted the report on Wednesday.
“I’m in the office. The speaker is in the office. I don’t know where that is coming from,” Ajiboye said in a chat with newsmen.
Several online reports on Wednesday claimed that the Speaker had resigned.
A circular dated February 17, 2025, allegedly released by Meranda, claiming she had resigned, has been trending on social media for two days.
However, the letter was not signed by anyone. The Lagos Assembly has been experiencing a leadership crisis since former Speaker Mudashiru was removed by the majority of lawmakers.
Meranda took her oath of office after the impeachment of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, by lawmakers during plenary on Monday.
Meranda represents the Apapa 1 state constituency in the assembly.
Taking her oath of office, she said, “I affirm that I will be faithful as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly; that I will perform my functions honestly to the best of my ability, faithfully, and in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Before becoming speaker, she was the assembly’s chief whip and recently served as the deputy speaker.
