Senator Abubakar Kyari, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)’s Deputy National Chairman (North), has been named acting National Chairman.

This comes after Senator Abdullahi Adamu resigned as the party’s national chairman.

If a national chairman resigns, the deputy national chairperson from the zone takes over as acting national chairman, according to the party’s constitution.

Kyari led several National Working Committee (NWC) members into a meeting being held in the party’s national secretariat in Abuja under strict security.

Kyari was born on January 15, 1960 in Borno State, the son of the late Brigadier Abba Kyari, a former military administrator of North Central from 1967 to 1975.

Kyari was elected to the House of Representatives in 1998 as a member of the now-defunct United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP). Between 1999 until 2003, he was elected to the House of Representatives on the platform of the now-defunct All Peoples Party (APP).

He served as Commissioner in Borno State from 2003 to 2005 and again from 2007 to 2011. In 2015, he was elected Senator to represent Borno North on the APC platform. He was re-elected in 2019 and will serve as Deputy National Chairman until 2022.
