Goodluck Jonathan, a former president, led a group of observers from Abuja to Nairobi on Friday in preparation for the August 9 general elections in Kenya.
Jonathan would lead the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa’s electoral observation mission (EISA).
A complete short-term team of observers has been sent by EISA to Kenya.
Jonathan’s special media adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, announced on Friday in Abuja that the EISA team is made up of 21 temporary observers from civil society organizations.
Additionally, it includes members of the academic community from all around the African continent as well as Election Management Bodies.
“The observers will be deployed in all the regions and specifically in ten counties, across Kenya.
“They will observe the final stages of the political parties’ campaigns, Election Day procedures and results aggregation processes.
“The Mission’s assessment of the electoral process will be guided by the principles and obligations set out in the 2007 African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.
“It will also be guided by the 2002 OAU/AU Declaration of the Principles Governing Democratic Elections in Africa, among others,’’ he stated.
At a news conference on August 11, Eze stated, the EISA Electoral Observation Mission would present a preliminary report on its findings.
