Kebbi State is set to host the world-famous Argungu International Fishing Festival from February 11 to 14, with organisers promising a colourful celebration of history, culture and unity.

The Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Samaila Mera, announced the dates after an expanded meeting of the State Festival Main Committee and the Emirate Local Organising Committee at the Deputy Governor’s Office in Birnin Kebbi.

Tracing the roots of the festival, the Emir said it began as a peace initiative between the Sokoto Caliphate jihadists and the Kanta Kingdom, before evolving into a globally recognised cultural event. Its historical value later earned it international status under UNESCO.

He added that the festival also played a symbolic role after the Nigerian Civil War, serving as a platform for national reconciliation by bringing together fishermen from across the country during the Yakubu Gowon administration.

According to the Emir, this year’s edition is expected to attract dignitaries from around the world and will once again place the Argungu Kingdom’s rich cultural heritage on the global stage.

Earlier, the Chairman of the State Main Committee and Deputy Governor of Kebbi State, Senator Umar Tafida, said preparations were in full swing. He disclosed that several subcommittees had been constituted to handle logistics, venue preparation, hospitality and awards.

Senator Tafida urged committee members to remain committed, stressing that sustained effort and coordination were key to delivering a successful and memorable festival.
