The Kano State Government will soon commence the trial of suspects linked to the killing of a housewife and her six children at Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters.
This follows the Kano state government’s announcement that it would take over the prosecution of the case after widespread public outrage over the tragic incident.
The suspects allegedly broke into the residence of Haruna Bashir, killing his wife, Fatima Abubakar, and her six children.
Three suspects—Umar Auwalu, 23; Isyaku Yakubu (also known as Chebe), 40; and Yakubu Abdulaziz (also known as Wawo), 21—were subsequently arrested in connection with the crime.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Abdulkarim Maude, SAN, stated that the decision to take responsibility of the case was based on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s mandate to guarantee accountability and justice for victims.
Maude described last week’s deaths in the Dorayi Chiranchi district of the Kumbotso Local Government district as a tragic and serious breach of the law.
“This heinous and inhuman act is a grave affront to humanity and the rule of law. On the directive of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Engr Abba Kabir Yusuf, my office will take over the prosecution of this case to ensure that justice is not only done but seen to be done,” he said.
According to preliminary findings, the perpetrators allegedly broke into the home in the late morning on Saturday.
According to reports, the woman tried to call for aid and contact relatives, but the perpetrators killed her before help arrived.
Some of the children were claimed to have returned from school just before the tragedy, and one of the victims was not her biological child.
The incident was initially reported to the Dorayi Divisional Police Office and then passed to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough investigation, which resulted in the arrest of suspects.
The Attorney General praised the Kano State Police Command for a prompt and professional response that resulted in the arrests.
He reassured citizens that the state government would maintain openness, accountability, and strict respect for due process throughout the prosecution and that the Ministry of Justice will vigorously prosecute the case.
Maude also urged the public to be calm, alert, and law-abiding, while continuing to provide security officials with credible information that could aid current investigations.
He stated that the administration would keep the public informed as the case progressed, emphasizing that anyone found guilty would face the full force of the law.
