Harry Kane maintained his scoring run against RB Leipzig, propelling Bayern Munich into the German Cup semi-finals for the first time in six years.
Kane netted a penalty for his sixth goal in four cup fixtures, raising his Bayern total to 39 in 34 appearances, thus becoming the top scorer in Europe’s top five leagues, prior to ex-Liverpool winger Luis Diaz adding their second.
The England captain’s penalty increased his total this season against Leipzig to five, featuring a hat-trick.
Bayern faced a tough challenge from Leipzig at the Allianz Arena, and the away team believed they had scored after four minutes when Christoph Baumgartner found the net, but his goal was disallowed by the video assistant referee (VAR) due to offside.
Bayern nearly scored as Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba deflected a Kane shot off the line after Maarten Vandevoordt made a save, and Ridle Baku cleared Joshua Kimmich’s corner.
The Bundesliga champions and current leaders continued to apply pressure, with Vandevoordt stopping Aleksandar Pavlovic, Kane, and subsequently Serge Gnabry.
Bayern found the net on 64 minutes when Vandevoordt fouled Josip Stanisic for a penalty, and Diaz scored the second just four minutes later with his 19th goal of the season after outmaneuvering Willi Orban to finish Michael Olise’s assist.
