    Jose Mourinho demands more respect

Jose Mourinho at the press conference said he is not respected by the media

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says he gets “no respect” from the media despite his managerial record.

The Portuguese was criticised for his treatment of defenders Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw this season and for a run of four league games without a win.

Mourinho has won three Premier League titles with Chelsea during two spells, and has won the Champions League twice.

United host Arsenal on Saturday and Mourinho claims the media have more respect for Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.

Mourinho publicly questioned Smalling and Shaw for missing the 3-1 win at Swansea earlier this month and suggested that the pair could have played through injuries.

The former Real Madrid manager faced criticism before United’s win at Swansea after his side were thrashed 4-0 at Chelsea and drew with Stoke and Burnley at Old Trafford.

When asked if he was surprised at his treatment, Mourinho said: “Tomorrow is a match between two managers with the best record in the Premier League. Sir Alex Ferguson is not here any more and we have won six or seven titles between us.

“Should we be respected even in periods when our results are not the best? I think Mr Wenger has that from all of you.

“I don’t think I have even though my last Premier League title was 18 months ago. Not 18 years. I don’t get that respect.”

Mourinho has never lost a Premier League game against Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal, but said that that record was “not important”, and reiterated his desire to stay at Old Trafford for the long term and win trophies.

“I am in the club where I want to be,” he said.

“When I was sacked at Chelsea I was not in trouble. I had lots of offers. I don’t speak about them. I could be working one week after in some of the biggest clubs in Europe. I waited for this chance.

“I was champion in four different clubs. I want to be champion in every club I have worked. I want to do that at Manchester United.”

    ‘No comment on Rooney’

United and England captain Wayne Rooney apologised this week after ‘inappropriate’ pictures emerged showing him at a wedding at the team’s hotel while on international duty.

But Mourinho said that he had no comment to make about Rooney’s actions, other than to say his captain was “ready to play”.

“Sometimes players come back stronger than when they left because something positive happened,” he said.

“Other times they are not as strong because of injuries or frustration because a result was bad. We know what didn’t go well but that is a different chapter that is closed until March.”

He also said that Shaw would play at some point in the next few games and refused to comment on the fitness of Smalling, who has broken his toe.

“You have your sources. You trust them. You believe them,” he said.

“You did that for 15 days. Now you are not going to ask me to comment on your trusted sources. You wrote, spoke, comment, criticised. I don’t say a word.

    “You do the big headlines.”
