Nigeria’s disaster management agency, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed that at least 40 students were rescued from the rubbles after a building collapsed at a school, Saint Academy in Jos, Plateau State on Friday.
The agency noted that the victims of the building collapse have been taken to hospitals in Jos with at least two students in intensive care.
“A two-storey building collapsed in Jos, leading to a search and rescue operation coordinated by NEMA. Over 40 trapped students were rescued and taken to various hospitals, including Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Plateau Specialist Hospital, Jos University Teaching Hospital, and AG Hospital,” the agency said.
NEMA added that the operation to rescue victims have ended, “with the site cleared and secured. Some students have been treated and discharged, while 30 remain hospitalized, with two in intensive care.”
“Unfortunately, some students lost their lives, but the exact number of deaths is still being confirmed,” NEMA noted.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has sympathized with the victims of the building collapse, a statement by his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, said.
Tinubu described the unfortunate incident as a huge loss to the nation, as well as a devastating development – too excruciating to imagine.
He condoled with the bereaved families, families of all the victims, and the people and government of Plateau State.
