The death toll from Tuesday’s petrol tanker explosion in Majiya, Taura Local Government Area, Jigawa State, has gotten to 167.

Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi made the revelation while Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf paid him a sympathy visit at Government House Dutse on Thursday evening.

“As of Thursday evening, 167 lives had been lost in the fire disaster,” according to Namadi.

He said that 67 people are currently receiving medical treatment at various hospitals both inside and outside the state.

The governor expressed heartfelt thanks on behalf of the Jigawa people and thanked Kano State for its tremendous assistance during this difficult time.

He pledged that the N100 million contributed by the Kano State Government will be wisely spent to help the victims and their families.

Many individuals worldwide have sympathised with the state administration and relatives of the impacted victims.

In addition, a mass funeral was organised for the first 147 victims who were alleged to have died while scooping fuel from the tanker crash.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau announced Thursday that it has launched an investigation into the petrol tanker explosion.

“The team will assess the circumstances surrounding the crash and the explosion to identify causal factors and provide safety recommendations aimed at preventing future occurrences.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this devastating accident. The NSIB is committed to uncovering the cause of the explosion and ensuring that safety lessons are learnt.”
