Bayern Munich won their 34th Bundesliga title after second-placed Bayer Leverkusen were unable to beat Freiburg on Sunday.

This is the first major trophy for both Harry Kane as a player and Vincent Kompany as a manager.

Bayern were expected to seal the title on Saturday at RB Leipzig, but a late goal from Yussuf Poulsen delayed their celebrations once more.

However, Leverkusen fell behind 2-0 at Freiburg after conceding goals either side of halftime, including an own goal by defender Piero Hincapié, and their chase was cut short despite a late flurry that saw them equalise through Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Tah.

After Leverkusen’s draw, Kane shared a video on social media of himself and his Bayern colleagues celebrating with a performance of Queen’s We Are The Champions as players had a beer.

Last season, Kane’s first in Germany, the former Tottenham striker scored 36 league goals to win the European Golden Shoe but was unable to win the title due to Leverkusen’s stunning unbeaten season under Xabi Alonso, with Stuttgart finishing second.

This season his 24 goals so far have helped restore Bayern to supremacy under Kompany, who this time last year was poised to be relegated from the Premier League with Burnley.

Kane is on track to become the first player to win the Bundesliga’s top scorer award in both of his first two seasons.

Bayern, who were champions in 1932 before the Bundesliga, have already won 12 titles in 13 seasons, which is 28 more than the next most successful teams, Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Bayern have had some heartbreak this season, losing 1-0 at home to Leverkusen in the German Cup in December and being ousted 4-3 by Inter in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Alonso, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, will finish the season empty-handed after Leverkusen was defeated by third-tier Arminia Bielefeld in this month’s German Cup semi-finals.
