Guardiola hopes Bournemouth comeback can revive City’s lost ‘soul’

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is optimistic that his team’s 2-1 comeback victory over Bournemouth in the FA Cup will help them regain the “soul” they have lacked in recent months.

City, who had suffered a 2-1 Premier League defeat to Bournemouth in November, secured their place in the FA Cup semi-finals for a record seventh consecutive season with second-half goals from Erling Haaland and Omar Marmoush.

That league loss at Bournemouth marked the start of a challenging period for the defending champions, ending their 32-game unbeaten run in the competition and leading to four straight league defeats.

City struggled to find consistency, winning only one of their next eight Premier League matches, severely denting their hopes of securing a fifth consecutive league title.

Reflecting on this difficult spell, Guardiola emphasized how crucial Sunday’s victory was in helping his players rediscover their identity.

“We talked a lot about the game we lost deservedly here against Bournemouth. That was when we started to go in our down-road this season,” Guardiola said.

“This season we have played more games like the one against Bournemouth, which is why we have not deserved more. The most important thing today was that the players have learned the lesson.

“I told them we cannot accept a performance like the one here in the league when people have travelled down for five hours. What we missed this season was heart, soul; the desire from how we’d done it for many, many years.”

Guardiola admitted that since the Bournemouth defeat, City had made a series of costly mistakes, including their Champions League exit in February after consecutive losses to Real Madrid.

Currently sitting fifth in the Premier League, City has managed just one win in their last four league outings. Earlier this month, they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, their first loss to the club since 2009.

“As a team we didn’t have heart. That’s the most important thing we have to recover at the end of the season and in the future.”

“I adore to play like today… A few weeks ago at Nottingham Forest, did the team play like today? No. Hopefully at the end (of the season) we can change, learn and prepare for next season.” Guardiola stated.

City will now face Nottingham Forest again in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley next month, hoping to carry forward the momentum from their latest victory.
