Tragedy has struck the Nigerian nursing community in the United Kingdom as a nurse, Nnena Miriam, was discovered dead in her Leeds apartment, prompting widespread grief and disbelief.

The heartbreaking news was shared by Fellow Nurses Africa, a group committed to promoting the nursing profession across the continent. According to the organisation, Miriam’s body was found by police officers after a missing person report was filed by a close friend.

The friend, worried after several days of unanswered calls and Miriam’s unexplained absence from work, took action and reported her missing. Authorities later confirmed the worst: her lifeless body was discovered in her residence.

In an official statement released on Wednesday, Fellow Nurses Africa said, “It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we report the sudden passing of one of our own, Nnena Miriam, a dedicated and professional nurse based in Leeds, United Kingdom.”

The statement continued, “Nurse Miriam was found dead in her room earlier this week under heartbreaking circumstances. According to reports, her last shift was on Sunday of last week.

Alarm bells were raised when her close friend tried reaching out to her repeatedly from that Sunday without success. Growing increasingly worried, the friend filed a missing person report—only for the police to later discover her lifeless body in her apartment.”

It was revealed that Miriam had only recently returned to the UK after travelling to Nigeria for her introduction ceremony ahead of her traditional marriage.

“Tuesday, April 29, was meant to be her special day — a day of joy, celebration, and new beginnings,” the statement added.
“Instead, her sudden death has left colleagues and loved ones overwhelmed with unspeakable grief and unanswered questions.”

Described as a compassionate and hardworking professional, Miriam was remembered fondly by those who worked with her.

“Her untimely passing is a profound loss to the healthcare family she served with pride and to the many patients whose lives she touched with care and compassion.

As the investigation continues, we join the family, friends, and the global African nursing community in mourning this tragic loss,” the group concluded.

This tragic development mirrors a similar incident in March 2024 involving another Nigerian nurse, Chidimma Ezenyili, who died in the UK after collapsing while attending to an elderly patient.

Ezenyili reportedly fell ill on February 22 while caring for Ian Hale, a senior citizen living on Scott Road. She passed away two days later.

The Nigerian community in the UK continues to mourn these painful losses, as questions mount and investigations into Miriam’s death proceed.
