The Golden Eaglets of Nigeria have been eliminated from the current Under-17 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Algeria.
The squad was defeated 1-2 by Burkina Faso in the event’s quarterfinals on Thursday at the Nelson Mandela Stadium.
As a result of failing to reach the AFCON semi-finals, Nigeria would not be able to compete in the 2023 FIFA Under-17 World Cup in November.
Following a defensive blunder by Tochukwu Ogbiji, Aboubacar Camara put the Burkina Faso team ahead in the 45th minute of play.
Nigeria’s goalkeeper Richard Odoh attempted to stop the ball, aiming for the back of the net, but the ball dropped in the penalty area, requiring Ogboji to clear, but an indecisive attempt allowed Camara the chance.
