Three police officers were killed and a dozen others injured in Italy overnight after an explosion at a residence during an attempted eviction, firemen said on Tuesday.
According to the ANSA news agency, two persons were caught, a brother and sister in their 60s, while a third family member fled.
The property at Castel d’Azzano, near Verona, was filled with gas, and the explosion occurred when the front door was unlocked during the midnight operation, according to ANSA, citing people familiar with the investigation.
It stated that the police had been attempting to evict the three siblings, who had previously threatened to blow themselves up.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni led tributes to the victims, whose bodies were recovered from the rubble of the house, and stated that she was monitoring developments.
Twelve law enforcement officials and a civilian woman were hurt, according to a statement from firefighters on X.
