Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State urged newly elected local government chairmen to join him in building a greater River State as he swore them in on Sunday at the State House in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

Fubara, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is at loggerhead with his political godfather, Nyesom Wike, which has sparked some unrest in the oil-rich state urged the chairmen to commit to ‘uniting and uplifting our people’.

“Today marked a new dawn for Rivers State as we swore in the newly elected local government chairmen. This is a call to serve with the requisite responsibility of uniting and uplifting our people,” Fubara said at the swearing in ceremony.

“I urge every chairman to embrace the spirit of service, work for the people and maintain the peace and progress of our beloved state.

“Together, we will build a greater Rivers State as we ensure that this administration’s goals are met for the benefit of all.

Opposition party, the Action Peoples Party (APP) won 22 chairmanship positions out of 23 in the Rivers State local government election. The PDP won just one while the All Progressives Congress won no local government seat.

Since Fubara fell out with Wike, he has been rumoured to be considering jumping ship from PDP to APP with the local government election result the clearest indication he might contest re-election on the APP platform.
