Flood caused by an early morning rainfall on Sunday ripped through farmlands in Kafin Koro, Paikoro Local Government Area, Niger State.

The Sunday flood submerged multiple farmlands in certain towns in Niger State, costing several millions of naira.

It also impacted 18 towns in the state’s Lapai Local Government Area, causing damage to some farmlands and putting many more at risk of being washed away.

The communities affected include Dere, Eshi, Apataku, Tsakanabi, Kuchi Kakanda, Arah, Achiba, Rebba, Ebwa, Pele, Edda, Rigido, Gbami, Yawa, Baka, and Muye.

    • Heavy rainfall destroys over 50 houses in Plateau

Jonathan Vatsa, Special Adviser to the Niger State Governor on Communication, Media, and Strategy, issued a statement urging impacted communities to migrate to a safer location immediately in order to avert more disasters.

Vatsa stated that though the government understood the people’s attachment to their ancestral homes, the need for them to adhere to the warning and relocate pending when the rains would be over would not be overstressed.

“We, as a government, will continue to be proactive by appealing to the people, especially those in the flood-prone areas, to immediately move upland to avoid the experience of the Mokwa disaster.

“The government is aware of their attachments to their ancestral homes and lands, but with the various flood alerts and what we are already experiencing, there is an urgent need for them to heed the government warning.”
