Residents of flood-prone areas in Adamawa have been encouraged to migrate to safer areas by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

Mr. Ladan Ayuba, Head of Operations, NEMA, Adamawa Field Office, made the announcement on Thursday while interacting with reporters.

The 2023 Annual Flood Outlook, according to Ayuba, anticipated flooding in five of the state’s 21 local government units.

He named Demsa, Fufore, Numan, Yola-South, and Yola-North as locations affected and asked other authorities to take proactive flood mitigation measures to prevent the calamity.

According to the NEMA official, Damare village in Gerei LGA is one of the safer areas for relocation shelter.

“From past experience, floods have affected other LGAs that were not expected to be affected by the disaster as Song and Madagal were.”

“We want people to understand that disaster has no friends, that people should stop building on waterways, and that drains should not be blocked to allow water to flow freely.”

“We value lives more than property; according to the weekly update, people in Ganye LGA may experience flooding between Aug. 9 and 13,” he stated.

He stated that the Agency, in partnership with the state government, has educated people about the hazards of flooding via the Local Emergency Management Agency.

According to him, the Agency is waiting for authorization to provide relief goods to victims of the 2023 flash flood when an evaluation procedure in the impacted regions is completed.
