Tragedy struck early on Monday morning along the Eliozu-Rumuokoro Road, Rivers State, when a University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) shuttle bus was involved in a fatal accident opposite First Bank, near the Eliozu Flyover.
According to eyewitnesses, the bus, which was transporting UNIPORT students to school, was speeding when the driver lost control.
About five students died in the crash, with several others rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital’s Accident and Emergency unit in critical condition.
An eyewitness confirmed seeing the bodies of two victims at the UPTH mortuary later that afternoon.
At the time of filing this report, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had yet to give an official statement on the accident.
