The Federal Government has issued a travel advisory for Nigerians in Iran and Gulf countries following fresh military strikes across the Middle East.
In the early hours of Saturday, the United States and Israel launched coordinated missile strikes on Iran. Tehran later responded with retaliatory attacks in parts of the Gulf region, raising fears of a broader conflict.
In a statement signed by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government said it is closely monitoring the “evolving and volatile situation” in the Middle East.
Heightened Tension Triggers Warning
According to the ministry, the advisory became necessary due to heightened tensions and the risk of further escalation.
“All Nigerians in Iran and affected Gulf countries are advised to remain extremely vigilant and conscious of their surroundings at all times,” the statement read.
Citizens were warned to avoid strategic sites, military facilities and government installations, which could become flashpoints.
The government also urged Nigerians to restrict non-essential movement and avoid large gatherings or public demonstrations until the security situation stabilises.
Embassies on High Alert
The ministry said Nigerian diplomatic missions in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, including the embassy in Tehran, are on high alert to provide consular assistance.
Nigerians were advised to comply strictly with local security directives and cooperate with law enforcement authorities.
The ministry further urged citizens to rely on official channels for credible updates and avoid misinformation.
Call for De-escalation
While assuring Nigerians abroad that their safety remains a top priority, the Federal Government called on parties involved in the conflict to de-escalate tensions and return to negotiations in the interest of global peace.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to assess the situation and provide further updates as necessary,” the statement added.
