Nigeria is setting its sights on a new Guinness World Record, this time for the longest dining table on the planet.

The ambitious attempt will headline the ‘Oriki: Taste of Culture’ Gastronomy Festival on December 6 in Abuja, featuring a spectacular 3.6-kilometre-long table expected to host between 2,000 and 3,000 diners.

Announcing the plan on Thursday, Abisoye Fagade, Director-General of the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR), said the initiative aims to blend world-class record-breaking with a celebration of Nigerian cuisine, music, and culture.

“We plan to break the record in the morning and host a grand dining event in the evening. It will show that Abuja can also stage major cultural festivals in December,” Fagade explained.

The festival, endorsed by Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Art, Culture and the Creative Economy, forms part of Nigeria’s broader push to strengthen its tourism, hospitality, and agribusiness sectors.

Musawa described gastronomy as a powerful tool for economic growth and youth empowerment, noting that Nigeria’s vibrant food scene now rivals its film and music industries on the global stage.

President Bola Tinubu is expected to officially unveil the event in Abuja.

If successful, the 3.6km table will surpass Egypt’s 2019 record of 3,189.93 metres, cementing Nigeria’s place in culinary history.
