The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) says four suspected bandits have been arrested near Akure Airport in Ondo State after a coordinated security operation involving multiple agencies.
In a statement on Sunday, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, said the arrests followed a distress alert that suspicious individuals were sighted behind the airport perimeter towards the Eleyewo community.
According to him, the alert prompted an immediate response from security personnel stationed at the airport.
“Security personnel comprising FAAN’s Aviation Security (AVSEC), the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, and other local security outfits immediately launched a joint search operation,” Agbebire said.
During the operation, some individuals reportedly attempted to flee the area, but security operatives eventually apprehended four suspects.
The suspects have since been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force Area Command for further interrogation and investigation.
FAAN commended the swift collaboration among aviation security personnel, the military, police, and local security groups whose coordinated efforts led to the arrests.
The agency specifically acknowledged the support of Amotekun Corps and community vigilantes who joined the operation.
The authority stressed the need to strengthen security around airport facilities, noting that protecting airport perimeters remains a critical component of aviation safety.
FAAN also disclosed that the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, with support from the Presidency, has accelerated the installation of modern perimeter fencing and advanced security infrastructure at airports across the country.
According to the agency, work has already begun in phases to reinforce security at airports managed by FAAN to prevent unlawful access and other security threats.
FAAN reassured travellers and airport host communities of its commitment to maintaining the safety and security of airport facilities nationwide.
