Atletico Madrid on Monday announced the demise at 91 of club legend Enrique Collar, who captained the team to a league title and three cup successes in the 1960s.
“The red and white family loses a symbol who gave everything to take Atletico Madrid to the pinnacle of national and continental football,” the club said in a statement.
The left winger scored 105 goals in 470 appearances for Atletico Madrid between 1953 and 1969 and captained the side for 10 years in the 1960s, making him the club’s longest-serving skipper.
Collar was on the scoresheet as Atletico defeated rivals Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in the 1960 cup final, before winning further cups in 1961 and 1965.
Under his direction, the less trendy team from the Spanish capital won the league title in 1965/66, during a decade when Real dominated the top flight.
Collar also won the 1962 European Cup Winners’ Cup and got 16 caps for Spain, which competed in the 1962 World Cup in Chile. He retired in 1970 after one season with Valencia.
