A building collapse in Egypt’s capital killed ten people and injured eight others on Monday, with numerous others feared to be missing beneath the wreckage, according to state media.
According to the Al-Akhbar Al-Youm daily, ambulances were summoned to the scene in Kerdasa, a working-class neighborhood, where civil defense workers searched for persons believed to be missing beneath the wreckage.
According to eyewitnesses, “a gas cylinder explosion” triggered the fall, and a police investigation is ongoing.
Building regulations are unevenly enforced in Cairo, the capital of Egypt, a huge metropolis of more than 26 million people.
In recent years, the city has experienced multiple deadly building collapses, caused by both aging buildings and, in some cases, inability to comply with building requirements.
