The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, failed to produce the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele, before the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama on Monday, as directed.

On November 2, Justice Olukayode Adeniyi ordered the anti-graft agency to either unconditionally free Emefiele or produce him in court to be granted bail.

However, after the case’s resumption, Emefiele’s lawyer, Barr. Mathew Burkaa, told the court that the EFCC had violated the injunction.

“My lord, they have flouted both orders, as today marks the 149th day of the applicant being in custody.

“The applicant is still in custody of the 3rd and 4th respondents, up until this moment that we speak,” Emefiele’s lawyer added.

    • Court orders Emefiele’s release from EFCC detention

Barr. Farouk Abdullahi, the EFCC’s counsel, argued that while the order was served on the Commission, it was not accurate that the ex-CBN boss had been in the agency’s custody for more than 100 days.

“My lord, I do confirm that we received the order. It is, however, not correct that the applicant has been in custody of the third and fourth respondents for over 100 days.

“He has only been in custody of 3rd and 4th for only 7 days.

“We have the processes, and we intend to react to them to set the record straight.”
