President Bola Tinubu has called for a comprehensive review of the recently announced governing boards of Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, following public concerns about the fairness and balance of the nominations.

The Federal Ministry of Education had earlier released the names of chairmen, Pro-Chancellors, and members of the boards of universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. The inauguration and retreat for the appointees had been scheduled for May 31.

However, public outcry ensued, with critics pointing out that the nominations appeared lopsided, with some states receiving disproportionately higher representation compared to others. In response, President Tinubu acknowledged the feedback and ordered a complete reassessment of the composition of the boards.

In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu emphasized his administration’s commitment to upholding the principle of federal character as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.

“The President has directed a total and comprehensive review of the list of nominees for the governing councils of tertiary institutions,” Onanuga said. “This decision comes in response to the reactions across the country, as the President is committed to ensuring strict compliance with the principle of federal character.”

The review will take into account national spread and ensure that every region of Nigeria is adequately represented on the boards. “The President is resolute in his efforts to guarantee that no part of the country is left out, and that every state is fairly represented in line with constitutional requirements,” Onanuga added.

The Federal Ministry of Education had planned the retreat and inauguration of the nominees on May 31, but this directive may result in a delay until the review is completed.

President Tinubu’s move has been welcomed by several public commentators who had voiced concerns about the initial list. The review is expected to reassure Nigerians that the composition of the governing boards will reflect the nation’s diversity, providing equitable representation for all regions.
