The minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has been sternly criticised by Nigerians following the graduation of his son from a university in the United Kingdom.

In a statement on X on Tuesday, an elated Wike announced the graduation of his son, Jordan, who obtained a master’s degree in law from Queen Mary University of London.

”Happy to witness, alongside my wife, the graduation ceremony of our son, Jordan, who just earned a Master of Laws (LLM) degree at Queen Mary University of London, UK,” Wike wrote.

”As a father, I am happy for the progress Jordan is making in the pursuit of his career,” he added.

The announcement by the former governor of Rivers State has generated heated reactions from Nigerians, with many berating Wike, ”a Nigerian public office holder,” for sending his children to foreign universities.

Nigerians alleged that politicians in other climes will not send their children to school in Nigeria; therefore, Wike ”erred” in sending his son, Jordan, to school in the UK.

They called for the enactment of laws to restrict public officeholders from sending their children or wards to schools outside the shores of Nigeria.

They opined that such legislation will lead to the growth of the educational sector in the country and bring to an end the incessant strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

Our correspondent highlights some of the reactions of Nigerians to the graduation of Wike’s son from a UK university.

Edigbe Sunny, ”UK politicians can never send their child to study in Nigeria. This shows you that our educational system is trash and proudly destroyed by the so-called leaders who can afford to send their kids away.”

Harrison Chibueze, ”The reason they don’t care about the educational system is that their children are enjoying the benefits of abroad; they go to hospitals abroad, so why will they think of developing their homes when their kids are abroad? Why not from Uniport as an ex-governor or Uniabj as a minister of FCT? Why the UK?”

    • Nigerians worry over Wike’s health

Fred Okeke, ”These politicians really love progress and success, yet they are so heartless and pay good money to ruin others future in their own country.”

”These politicians really love progress and success, yet they are so heartless and pay good money to ruin others futures in their own country.”

Anthony Okobi, ”Until there are laws that make it mandatory for all political officeholders and civil servants to make their children attend only public schools, our leaders will never fix our educational system. All children of every American president schooled in America.”

Adenike Fagbemi, ”Shameless people, they build schools that their children can’t afford; they’ve corrupted every institution.”

Emmanuel Ibe, ”A former minister of education, but the administration was so bad your own child had to study abroad.”

Prince Tony, ”Nigeria is a hustling ground for the politicians; none of them believe in Nigeria. The country will never work.”

Abiola Andrew, ”This is why our institutions, mostly education and health, will keep deteriorating; our politicians use foreign medical services and patronise foreign education using government funds.”

Abayomi Caleb, ”Why would a government official sponsor their children to study abroad?

”It should be part of the contract they sign. If you want to be a government official, don’t have anything to do outside the country except being assigned to.

”Why won’t they spoil the ones we have here, since they don’t really care what happens to the school here?”
