The Edo State Security Corps has apprehended 18 individuals suspected of involvement in kidnapping and armed robbery along the Benin-Auchi Road.

The operation, carried out on Friday near the Eguedion Camp, close to an army checkpoint, led to the recovery of 38 locally-made guns, pellets, and various charms.

In a press statement on Saturday, the Corps Commandant, Friday Ibadin, detailed the arrest, explaining that officers were on a routine patrol when they spotted two armed individuals.

“Today, 14th February 2025, while on patrol along Benin-Auchi Road by Eguedion Camp, close to soldiers’ checkpoint, two persons were sighted holding guns. On sighting my men, they took to their heels. They were chased to a camp where 18 persons were arrested,” he stated.

Ibadin further revealed that 17 of the 18 suspects are non-indigenes, with only one hailing from the Agbede community.

“17 of the 18 arrested suspects are non-indigenes, while one is an indigene from the Agbede community. 38 fully loaded locally made guns and charms were also recovered in the process,” he said.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to security, Ibadin emphasized the corps’ determination to rid Edo State of criminal activities.

“Our men will continue to comb the bushes and sensitise locals to ensure our forests are rid of these criminals and that Edo State is safe and secured for all,” he assured.

The arrested suspects were handed over to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Agbede Police Station. Ibadin also called for stronger collaboration among security agencies to sustain efforts against crime.

This development comes just days after Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, directed security agencies to intensify operations against criminals, ensuring that farmlands and forests remain safe for residents.
