Dr. Omar Touray, President of the Economic Community of West African States Commission, ECOWAS, congratulated Ghana’s people on Sunday on the triumph of their presidential elections on December 7, 2024 which produced John Mahama as winner.

Touray applauded the democratic maturity on display during the electoral process, as well as the peaceful handover of power.

He congratulated Ghana’s former president, John Mahama, on his electoral victory and praised Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia for his statesmanship in admitting defeat quickly.

“The President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Touray, congratulates the Ghanaian people on their successful and generally peaceful elections.

“The president of the commission also congratulates His Excellency, John Mahama, on his victory.

“The president equally commends Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia for his timely concession, which demonstrates his statesmanship and love for the country,” a statement from the commission read.

Mahama, the National Democratic Congress nominee, won the country’s presidential election after his major rival, Bawumia, accepted defeat.

The vice president stated that he contacted his opponent, Mahama, to congratulate him, stating in a statement, “The people of Ghana have spoken, and they have voted for change at this moment. We respect this with great humility.”

According to AFP, the Election Commission expects to announce the official results on Tuesday.

The setback in Saturday’s election brings the governing New Patriotic Party’s two terms in power under President Nana Akufo-Addo to an end, after Ghana experienced its worst economic crisis in years, with soaring inflation and a debt default.
