Prison guards in Costa Rica were stunned when they nabbed an unlikely drug mule—an ordinary-looking cat attempting to sneak narcotics into a high-security facility.

The feline felon was intercepted outside La Reforma prison in San Rafael de Alajuela, with a makeshift pouch strapped to its body. Inside, authorities discovered packets of cocaine, crack, and marijuana—clearly not your average catnip stash.

Officials believe the animal was trained by inmates or external accomplices to deliver contraband inside the sprawling prison complex.

Local media dubbed it the “narco-cat,” as investigations continue into who masterminded the bizarre smuggling operation.

This isn’t the first time animals have been exploited by criminals, but the incident has raised serious questions about prison security and the creative lengths traffickers will go to outsmart the system.

The kitten has since been handed over to animal welfare authorities while the drugs were seized as evidence.

Authorities have vowed to tighten surveillance around the prison perimeter.
