Nigerian Disc Jockey Florence Otedola, popularly called DJ Cuppy, has expressed gratitude to God for being able to pay her tithe and offering all through 2025.
Cuppy expressed her gratitude in a statement she posted on her verified X page on Monday.
“Proud to say I paid my tithes and offerings all 12 months this year, and God, I thank You,” she wrote.
Urging her followers to learn to give to God, the DJ made allusion to the story of the widow in the Holy Bible who gave her offering despite having little resources.
“A little encouragement, by the way, remember the widow Jesus talked about? It is never about how much but the heart posture,” she advised.
However, her statement has attracted backlash from a cross section of Nigerians who berated her for announcing she does pay her tithe.
For some others, they alleged that tithing is a medium through which religious groups exhort their members.
Replying to her statement, a social media user simply identified as Oludayo queried, “What’s so special about tithes?
”Another way religion extorts its members,” he added.
Sharing similar sentiments, AK Ochulo noted, “You just wasted that tithe money on someone who doesn’t need it. It would have been better if you had given it to the poor in your community than giving it to a church. You would be more fulfilled if you did that.”
”And I’m very sure you didn’t give a kobo to your community members who need support for their daily lives in any way you can,” MC Arizona argued.
”Jesus Christ never asked us to pay tithes; He said we should show love to our fellow brothers and sisters. Stop giving any man a tithe; be a new person this new year!” He added.
Another X user, Godiu, urged the DJ to use her tithe to attend to the need in the society.
”Cash out for that man of God. Why not use that money to help the poor and homeless instead of enriching men of God?” Godiu argued.
For another X user identified as Rainbow, he berated Cuppy for disclosing what Christians have been enjoined to keep as secret.
”So why are you coming to tell us you paid tithes and offerings the whole 12 months? We should clap for you. Things like this are not even to be spoken about. Your offerings to God are between you and God,” Rainbow stated.
Supporting Rainbow’s position, Dotun said, ”You remember what the Bible said about loving your neighbor as yourself?
It is not about giving tithes of mint, but your neighbors who are in need.”
Another X user, The Good Guy, criticized her, saying, ”Imagine paying tithes and coming out to tell the world. Didn’t Jesus say, ‘do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees…will reward you.”
”What then now is the essence of your tithes?”
Joseph Erakhor argued that “we are not supposed to know about this.” That should be between you and your God of tithes.”
In the same vein, Daniel Ekene queried, ”So why are you then coming here to tell the general public about your tithe? Are you sure it’s still from the heart?”
