A Federal High Court has granted bail to former presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, in the sum of ₦10 million with one surety in like sum.

According to Channels TV, the surety must be a responsible individual with landed property of equal value.

The individual is also required to submit the original documents of the property and a passport photograph to the court registrar.

Ruling on the bail application, Justice Musa Liman directed Sowore to surrender his international passport to the court.

The judge also gave him 24 hours to meet the bail conditions or face remand in police custody.

    • Court adjourns arraignment of ex-NHIS boss Usman Yusuf to Feb 3

The decision followed an earlier adjournment of the bail ruling, after arguments from Sowore’s lawyer, Marshall Abubakar, and the prosecution counsel, Udey Jonathan.

Sowore is facing 17 counts of cybercrime charges filed by the Nigerian Police. He pleaded not guilty to the allegations, which stem from an alleged tweet referring to Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as the “illegal IGP.”

The police claim the statement is false and intended to incite public disorder.

During the bail hearing, Sowore’s counsel requested lenient terms, while the prosecution pushed for stringent conditions to secure his attendance at trial.
