Chelsea snatch stoppage‑time equaliser against Man City

Racist Chants: Maresca expects no problems with Enzo Fernandez

Enzo Fernandez netted a late equalizer as Chelsea wrapped up a challenging week by securing a well-earned Premier League point at title-contending Manchester City.

Calum McFarlane, typically the coach for Chelsea’s under-21 squad, has assumed the role of first-team manager on a temporary basis after Enzo Maresca’s exit on Thursday.

His team troubled City for extended stretches, even after falling behind, until Argentine Fernandez nudged in on the third try to secure a tie.

The victory appeared to be going to City after Tijjani Reijnders’ goal in the first half, but back-to-back draws have resulted in them now trailing league leaders Arsenal by six points.

Chelsea organized defensively, and it wasn’t until the 37th minute that the first shot on target occurred when Erling Haaland’s deflected attempt appeared to be soaring over Filip Jorgensen, but the Chelsea keeper made an excellent recovery to redirect the ball wide.

A moment later, the Norwegian forward slashed in and struck a shot that hit the post, as City felt a goal was imminent.

It arrived just in time before halftime, as Reijnders seized a loose ball at the penalty area’s edge, sidestepped Benoit Badiashile, and struck a shot inside the near left post.

Chelsea began the second half positively, and Pedro Neto could have brought them level but shot over from eight yards out.

Manchester City has been pursuing Arsenal closely all season and unexpectedly lost two points in a scoreless tie at Sunderland on Thursday. They’ve stumbled once more, this time failing to secure the win.

Pep Guardiola’s team had secured eight straight league victories at Etihad Stadium and was on the verge of a ninth, yet Fernandez found the net at the far post, deflating the home fans and players.

City had to pay for the missed chances in the first half by the usually reliable Haaland.

The Norwegian has been highly productive this season but is currently experiencing a goal drought by his standards, not finding the net in his last three matches. He stays at 149 goals across all competitions for the team.

The hosts gained confidence at the start with midfielder Rodri making his initial appearance in three months. Guardiola has openly expressed the significant impact the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner has on his team and how much they felt his absence during last season’s trophyless effort.

The 29-year-old brings a soothing influence—on Sunday he acquired the ball 10 times and triumphed in nine of his 11 defensive challenges, while also generating four opportunities in the attacking zone.

Dutchman Reijnders was allowed to advance and netted a goal, marking three goals in four matches, but the home team lamented missed opportunities to increase their advantage.

City had found it difficult to make serious inroads until the opener, with Phil Foden scuffing wide and captain Bernardo Silva curling off target after showing quick feet inside the box.

Once ahead, though, they looked poised to see it out.

As well as conceding late on, City will also be concerned by a second-half injury suffered by defender Josko Gvardiol, who appeared to twist his leg in a challenge and had to be helped off the pitch while limping heavily.

Chelsea supporters celebrated an unlikely point, and Arsenal fans will be doing the same in the capital, the Gunners now holding a healthy advantage at the summit.

Maresca, the manager appointed 18 months prior, left Chelsea on New Year’s Day.

They subsequently lost defender Wesley Fofana to an illness, while starting goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was considered unfit to play following an injury.

Caretaker manager McFarlane had never directed a senior men’s match, and this initial chance arose against Guardiola, often considered the top manager globally, who had managed 1,011 games prior to this and secured numerous trophies.

There was worry regarding Chelsea’s competitiveness at Etihad Stadium due to the significant difference in experience between those making decisions from the sidelines.

Chelsea swiftly alleviated those worries by pressuring City intensely, disrupting them during set pieces, and maintaining defensive solidity.

That was until they allowed a goal during a rough stretch at the end of the first half.

Despite the absence of Sanchez, Marc Cucurella, Levi Colwill, and Moises Caicedo—who traveled to express support—Chelsea showcased a united, competitive team ready to challenge City.

Certainly, there were moments when they fell short, especially due to Badiashile’s errors that resulted in the goal, and their creativity was limited in the first half.

Delap provided them a boost when he came on after the break, driving his team forward, including a chance he fashioned for himself in what could be considered his finest league performance since joining Chelsea.

However, it was Fernandez who emerged with the equalizer, finishing a low cross from the right for his seventh goal of the season, tying him as the leading scorer for the Blues this season.

It was a significant moment following a remarkable performance from the team, demonstrating that Chelsea’s season still has potential despite a tumultuous incident that appeared to cause Maresca’s rift with management, leading to his departure.

Maresca’s replacement could potentially be Liam Rosenior, the manager of Strasbourg.

The new manager will take charge of a team currently ranked fifth in the Premier League, merely three points adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool, with chances to guide this squad in the FA Cup third round, the Carabao Cup semi-final, and the Champions League.
