Chelsea Football Club have announced the signing of former England number one goalkeeper Rob Green on a one year deal.

Green joins to provide backup for Thibaut Courtois and Willy Caballero after leaving Huddersfield Town, where he spent last season.

“It has been a whirlwind 24 hours. You are thinking about your career and where you want to go and then you get a phone call like this, and it is a short conversation,” he said after signing.

“It has been a pretty dramatic time for me and I can’t wait to get started. I am absolutely delighted and it is a thrill and an honour to be here.”

Green arrives with huge Premier League experience having represented Norwich City, West Ham United and Queens Park Rangers in the top flight.

He has also been part of England squads at two major tournaments.

Rob Green began his career at Norwich where he came through the ranks before making his debut in a 1999 fixture against arch rivals Ipswich Town, keeping a clean sheet and making a string of impressive saves.

After establishing himself as first-choice keeper at Carrow Road, Green played an integral role as the Canaries finished top of the Championship in 2004, securing promotion to the Premier League.

Two years later Green joined West Ham and he would go on to spend six seasons at Upton Park, making 241 appearances and picking up the club’s Player of the Year award in 2007/08.

Green’s final game for the Hammers, in 2012, was a fitting end to his time at the club as he helped his team gain promotion back to the Premier League courtesy of a 2-1 win over Blackpool at Wembley in the Championship play-off final.

A four-year spell at QPR followed, where Green made 128 appearances and experienced further play-off final success in 2014 as they beat Derby to seal a return to the top flight. Two of his seasons at Loftus Road were spent in the Premier League.

Rob Green joined Leeds United in 2016 and enjoyed a solid campaign as the club’s first-choice keeper, and it was during his time at Elland Road he made his 600th league appearance, against former club QPR.

He then spent last season at Huddersfield in their first Premier League season.

After making his England debut in 2005 in a friendly against Colombia, Green was named in the squad for the World Cup a year later, although injury would rule him out of the competition.

His first start for the Three Lions arrived in 2009, in a World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan, and he was part of the squad which travelled to South Africa for the finals in the summer of 2010. Green was also part of the final 23 for Euro 2012.
