Chelsea edge Man United to bolster Champions League push

Marc Cucurella’s second-half header secured a narrow 1-0 victory for Chelsea over Manchester United on Friday, extending their unbeaten Premier League home run in 2025 to 10 matches (W8, D2) and keeping their Champions League qualification hopes alive.

United manager Ruben Amorim surprised many by fielding a strong lineup just five days ahead of their UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao. His decision sent a clear message to his players prove their readiness.

United nearly opened the scoring early when Harry Maguire finished smartly from a Bruno Fernandes delivery, but the goal was disallowed for a marginal offside following a VAR check.

Chelsea responded with intent as Reece James struck the post from long range and Cole Palmer forced a save from Andre Onana just before halftime.

With Aston Villa having beaten Tottenham 2-0 earlier in the evening, Chelsea needed all three points to stay in the top-four race.

The breakthrough came late when James turned provider, delivering a pinpoint cross that Cucurella headed past Onana to send Stamford Bridge into raptures.

The Blues had a chance to double their lead moments later, but Noni Madueke wasted the opportunity, slicing a clear-cut chance wide.

Manchester United pushed for an equaliser through Amad Diallo and Fernandes, but were repeatedly denied, including a strong stop from Chelsea keeper Robert Sánchez.

There was late drama when the referee awarded Chelsea a penalty after Onana collided with Tyrique George, but VAR overturned the decision.

Ultimately, Enzo Maresca’s men held firm to move into fourth place, while United’s poor league form continued—they are now on their longest-ever Premier League winless run, failing to secure victory in eight consecutive matches.

All eyes now turn to Wednesday’s Europa League final, a potential lifeline for Amorim’s side in what has otherwise been a turbulent season.
