Carney Chukwuemeka has agreed the terms of a six-year contract at Chelsea and completed his transfer from Aston Villa.

It follows the announcement earlier this week that Chelsea had reached an agreement with Aston Villa for the 18-year-old’s permanent switch to Stamford Bridge.

The midfield all-rounder is one of the brightest talents in the country and arrives having recently helped England to glory at the Under-19 European Championship, scoring in the final against Israel. He featured in every game for the young Lions and earned a place in UEFA’s Team of the Tournament following a series of eye-catching performances.

Chukwuemeka started his youth career with Northampton Town before moving to Villa at the age of 12 and advancing to make his senior debut in the Premier League against Tottenham in May 2021. His ball-carrying ability and eye for an incisive pass have been key attributes in a rapid rise through the ranks.

A week later, he helped Villa to a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the FA Youth Cup final, their first win in the competition in 19 years, and finished as the tournament’s top goalscorer. He was also named Academy Player of the Season and came off the bench in the Premier League season finale against Chelsea at Villa Park.

The 2021/22 campaign was a breakthrough one for the teenager as he made his first Premier League start in late August and then featured in a Carabao Cup tie at Stamford Bridge as Thomas Tuchel’s side squeezed through on penalties.

In total, he made 14 appearances and became the youngest player to register a Premier League goal contribution for the club in December’s 2-0 win over Norwich City.

On completing his move to Stamford Bridge, Chukwuemeka said: ‘It’s been quite hectic but I couldn’t get Chelsea out of my head the last few days so I’m just happy and relieved that it’s all done.

‘I’m so excited and just can’t wait to get on the pitch, meet all the players and try to win games and trophies with Chelsea.’

Todd Boehly, chairman, said: ‘Carney is one of the most exciting young players in Europe so we are really looking forward to seeing him in action at Stamford Bridge. We are delighted to be able to bring him to Chelsea and add such a talented young individual to our squad for the new season and beyond.’

Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, co-controlling owners, said: ‘We are building for both the now and the future so signing one of the hottest teenage talents in English football fits with both those aims. Chelsea have shown that young potential can be fulfilled at this club and under our ownership we are determined this will continue. We are looking forward to Carney thriving here.’
