The Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, has issued a stern warning to troops deployed in the Niger Delta, cautioning them against involvement in oil theft or any form of compromise while protecting critical national assets.
Oluyede delivered the warning at the commissioning of a newly built Non-Commissioned Officers’ (NCOs) accommodation complex and a remodelled conference hall at the headquarters of Operation Delta Safe in Igbogene, Bayelsa State.
According to a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Samaila Uba, the CDS charged personnel to uphold professionalism, integrity and discipline in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.
Oluyede stressed that safeguarding oil and gas infrastructure remains critical to Nigeria’s economic stability. He warned that any collusion, compromise or unethical conduct by troops would not be tolerated.
Oil theft has long undermined Nigeria’s revenue and security in the Niger Delta. The CDS emphasised that troops must remain focused and resist any temptation that could jeopardise national economic sustainability.
While delivering the warning, Oluyede also reaffirmed his commitment to improving the welfare of Armed Forces personnel. He assured troops that proposals aimed at enhancing welfare packages would be pursued to completion.
He commended the Commander of Operation Delta Safe, Rear Admiral Olugbenga Oladipo, for executing the accommodation and conference hall projects. The CDS described the facilities as value-adding interventions aligned with the military’s broader welfare objectives.
In his remarks, Oladipo said the NCO accommodation complex comprises 24 apartments fitted with round-the-clock solar power supply, steady water facilities, bedding and cooling systems to improve living conditions.
He explained that the projects were delivered in line with the CDS’ Military Strategic Philosophy, which places troop welfare at the heart of operational effectiveness.
Operation Delta Safe is tasked with protecting oil and gas infrastructure, deterring militancy, curbing sea robbery, and safeguarding lives and property in the Niger Delta region.
Among dignitaries present were Major General Emmanuel Emekah, General Officer Commanding 6 Division of the Nigerian Army; Air Vice Marshal J.J. Ijugigal, representing the Air Officer Commanding, Mobility Command; and Brigadier General Nurulhayat Mohammed, Commander of 16 Brigade, alongside other senior officers from Defence Headquarters.
The CDS’ warning underscores the military’s renewed focus on accountability, discipline and the protection of Nigeria’s vital oil assets.
