Mark Carney will be sworn in as Canada’s next prime minister on Friday morning along with his cabinet, the governor general’s office announced on Wednesday.

The incoming Liberal leader pledged a “seamless and quick” transition as he takes over from Justin Trudeau, who announced his departure in January after almost a decade in power.

Carney, 59, a political neophyte, was decisively elected as the Liberal Party’s new leader on Sunday, receiving 86% of more than 150,000 votes.

His political debut, after previously leading the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England comes at a time of rising trade tensions with the United States.

In his victory speech to supporters, Carney took a belligerent tone towards Washington, stating, “In trade, as in hockey, Canada will win.”

On Wednesday, he stated that he was “ready to sit down” with US President Donald Trump to negotiate a new trade agreement in order to avert more economic turmoil.

A 25% tariff on steel and aluminium imports into the United States went into force earlier. Canada responded with retaliatory levies.
