CARICOM shouldn’t propose a new agreement to Haiti – Werley Nortreus

This week, CARICOM invited several Haitian leaders to a three-day meeting in Jamaica, where they spoke about Haiti’s situation.

Several Haitian leaders have participated and agreed to listen. The President of the High Transition Council, Mrs. Mirlande Manigat, and other leaders rejected this invitation.

After the meeting, the leaders who participated said that the meeting failed because they did not reach a good agreement.

The current Haitian Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, who participated, stated in a speech that he did not come for a new agreement because there is already one.

On Thursday, Haitian politician Werley Nortreus and others said CARICOM was wrong for coming up with a new agreement or proposal for the country during their meetings in Jamaica when the country already had an agreement that would establish constitutional reform, proper security, and fair general elections.

Nortreus said that he realizes that CARICOM and others from the international community want the current Haitian Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, to organize general elections before he establishes constitutional reform.

A general election without constitution reform will exclude the majority of new politicians who have the vision to become candidates for high offices, Nortreus said.

Nortreus also said this action is a violation and lack of respect for the dignity of Haitians, new candidates, and the December 2022 agreement that has already been signed.

He said the country doesn’t need multiple agreements at all. The country should focus on one agreement, he said.

“I do not believe that Haiti needs more than one agreement at the same time. It is better if Haitians focus on the agreement signed in December 2022.

“General elections without constitutional reform will exclude the majority of new candidates. Haitians prefer the existing plan, where there will be constitutional reform, security, and elections.

“I think that CARICOM should not propose a new agreement while there is already one.

“I prefer that CARICOM offer its support for the existing agreement rather than proposing a new one”, said Haitian politician Werley Nortreus and founder of Jeunes Dirigeants Haïtiens Progressistes.

According to several sources, Haiti has to organize a constitutional reform, establish proper security, and organize general elections, but there is no fixed date for this.
