Airtel Nigeria, the country’s second-largest telecom operator, has updated its data pricing structure, imposing a price adjustment of up to 50%, according to information posted on its website on Monday.
The price change, which impacts various data bundles, is consistent with ongoing industry concerns about rising operational expenses.
While the company has yet to publish an official announcement, the decision reflects a broader movement among telecom carriers for a tariff review to mitigate the effects of inflation and exchange volatility.
In addition to data modifications, the operator, which has over 56 million members, hiked phone call costs over the weekend.
“Yes, we have updated data prices today, and they are available on our website. However, the increase is not up to 50 percent,” the official clarified.
In its revised price list, Airtel assured customers of continued affordability, stating, “Whatever your data needs are, we have a plan for you. Our fast, affordable, and reliable internet experience will keep you connected anytime, anywhere. To get started, dial *312.”
The revised Airtel daily and weekly data plans include N50 for 40MB valid for one day, N100 for 100MB valid for one day, N200 for 200MB valid for three days, N350 for 1GB valid for one day, N350 for 350MB valid for seven days, N500 for 750MB plus 1GB YouTube Night and 200MB YouTube Music/Spotify valid for seven days, N500 for 1GB plus 1GB YouTube Night and 50MB Socials valid for seven days, N500 for 2GB valid for two days, and N1500 for 5GB valid for seven days.
Similarly, MTN, Nigeria’s largest telecom provider, has modified its data and call pricing to comply with the NCC’s permission.
Customers have been paying extra for calls, SMS, and internet since the revised price was announced last week.
The most recent increases came as telecom carriers dealt with inflation, foreign exchange instability, and the increased cost of network construction.
