A Nigerian correctional officer stationed at the Burra Correctional Centre in Bauchi State allegedly killed a fellow officer over food.

The event took place on Tuesday, September 17, at around 2 p.m. in Burra town, Ningi Local Government Area of the state.

According to an eyewitness, the deceased, Aliyu Abubakar Chiroma, and his colleague, Kabiru Abubakar, were well-known close friends at the centre.

The disagreement began when Chiroma brought his lunch, and Kabiru insisted on eating it against Chiroma’s desires, resulting in a heated argument.

    • Police warn against fighting, say it’s criminal

“The two exchanged words, which quickly escalated into a physical fight. Kabiru headbutted Aliyu, causing him to fall. The commotion drew the attention of nearby people,” the source explained.

Aliyu was transported to Burra General Hospital, where he was declared dead despite attempts to rescue him.

Hon. Nasiru Zakari, Chairman of the Ningi Local Government Council, verified the occurrence Thursday.

“I received a report about this unfortunate event at the Burra Correctional Centre, where an officer was allegedly killed by a colleague over a lunch disagreement,” Zakari said.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Usman Tata, the Bauchi State Penitentiary Service Public Relations Officer, verified the incident but stressed that it took place outside the penitentiary institution.

Ahmad went on to say that Chiroma was from Giade LGA, whereas the suspect, Kabiru Abubakar, was from Dass LGA.

He further stated that the deceased’s remains had been turned over to his family for burial, while the suspect was in police custody for further investigation.
