The Bauchi State Government has evacuated 64 University of Jos (UNIJOS) students following the recent violence in the Angwan Rukuba area of Jos, Plateau State.
The evacuation followed the violence, which reportedly killed approximately 27 people, raising fears about the safety of students in the vicinity.
Hadiza Kango, the state Commissioner for Higher Education, made the announcement on Friday while receiving students at the Government House in Bauchi.
She stated that the move followed a distress call from Mohammed Suleiman, President of the National Union of Bauchi State Students, who informed authorities that the students were stuck in their hostels.
She said, “My attention was drawn to the situation by the NUBASS President, Mohammed Suleiman. Immediately, he alerted me, I took action, and the government responded swiftly with full support and cooperation to rescue the students.”
Kango also stated that officials ensured the safe return of the students before handing them over to their parents and guardians.
“Education is very important. Their status as students informed our quick intervention. I am glad they stayed together, avoided trouble, and did not participate in the crisis. That shows responsibility. They should maintain this conduct and remain committed to their studies,” she added.
Mohammed Abdulwahab, the student leader, confirmed that buses and security personnel were deployed to evacuate affected students back to Bauchi.
He praised the state government for their prompt response to the situation.
The Plateau crisis has raised security concerns in Jos, with residents and institutions affected by the violence.
