Bashir Ahmad, a former media aide to ex-president Muhammadu Buhari, has called for capital punishment for bandits and kidnappers.

In a statement shared on his verified X handle on Sunday, Bashir urged Sen. Kawu Sumaila, senator representing Kano South Senatorial District, and Hon. Ghali Tijjani Mustapha “to introduce new legislation or the revision of current laws to mandate the death penalty as punishment for banditry and kidnapping.”

In his statement, which comes on the heels of the kidnapping of Najeebah and her five sisters, Ahmad noted that “such punishment can effectively help to combat these grave criminal offenses.”

His statement in parts reads, “I am reaching out to Sen. Kawu Sumaila, a senator representing me at the Senate, and Hon. Ghali Tijjani Mustapha, a member representing me at the House of Representatives, to urge them to introduce new legislation or the revision of current laws to mandate the death penalty as punishment for banditry and kidnapping.

“Specifically, individuals caught committing these heinous crimes against humanity should be subjected to immediate capital punishment.” I believe such punishment can effectively help combat these grave criminal offenses.”

Furthermore, Ahmad urged Nigerians to reach out to the members representing them in the National Assembly to advocate for the enactment of a law that prescribes the death penalty for kidnappers and bandits.

“I urge you to also reach out to your representatives at the National Assembly to advocate for this cause,” Ahmad added.
