Armed bandits have struck again in Niger State, abducting scores of passengers, including two prominent figures, in a brazen highway attack.
The ambush occurred recently along the Mokwa–New Bussa road in Mashegu LGA, near the Zugurma–Ibbi axis. Eyewitnesses said the attackers opened fire on police patrol vehicles close to the National Park before targeting at least three commercial buses. Traders returning from the market were among those seized.
Notable victims include Alhassan Bawa Niworo, a former chairman of the Niger State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), and Ahmed Mohammed, a commissioner with the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC).
Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun confirmed the incident to reporters, assuring that officers are intensifying efforts to secure the safe release of those abducted.
This latest bandits attack underscores the worsening insecurity in Niger and neighbouring Kwara. Only in July, 13 people — including a police officer and three vigilantes — were killed in Mongoro, Mariga LGA. Days later, six farmers were gunned down in Rijau LGA, further fuelling fear across rural communities.
Residents say the frequency and boldness of the attacks are leaving highways unsafe and villages vulnerable, with many calling for urgent government intervention before the crisis spirals further.
